How Much is a Cubic Yard?

A cubic yard is 3 feet wide x 3 feet long x 3 feet high. Think of a bunch of yard sticks put together to make a cube.

Actual weight will vary according to the density of the material you are purchasing, so if someone tells you that you are getting a "ton" per cubic yard, you are not getting more for your money, just a more desse and heavy item!

Comparisons

A cubic yard of feathers..... Maybe 20 pounds ?
A cubic yard of sawdust....Depending on how wet - 300 pounds ?
A cubic yard of leaves...Also depending on moisture - 200 pounds ?
A cubic yard of crushed stone....Approximately 2,000 pounds.
A cubic yard of concrete... Approximately 3,000 pounds.

They are all the same size!

To Calculate How Much You Need

Measure the area you wish to cover....length x width. This will give you the total square footage. For example: 10' wide x 20' long = 10 x 20 = 200 square feet.

Next, decide how thick you want to cover the area.... 1"? 3"? 6 "?

A cubic yard is 3' x 3' x 3' or 27 cubic feet. An easy way to think of it is a 9' x 3' area that is 12 inches deep.

At 6" deep you double the area you can cover (9' x 6'). At 3" you can double the area again (9' x 12'), and so on.
